A woman and a man are sitting at a white desk, smiling and looking at papers. The woman is standing behind the man, leaning over and sharing a happy moment. The man is wearing a striped vest and a red checkered shirt. The scene appears to be in a modern, cozy office or home office setting with decorative items on a shelf and a lamp.

meet the calligraphers

Handsome Ink is an award-winning luxury calligraphy studio in Austin, TX founded by husband and wife duo Luis and Ana. They’ve dedicated the name of their studio after their good-looking dog, Handsome, who had absolutely no say in the matter. Their mission is to bring people closer together through the art of beautiful writing.

Our Story

When Ana and Luis met at salsa class in New York City, they never imagined they’d both be talking shop (that is, calligraphy) on their first date. Ten years later, the lettering banter has never stopped, and evolved into a full-sized live event and calligraphy business serving Austin, Texas and beyond.

ten years and counting

As lifelong learners, both Luis and Ana have devoted years to studying fine penmanship. They’ve learned from master penmen from around the world, exploring a rich variety of traditional script styles—including Roundhand, Blackletter, Engrosser’s Script, Italic, and Gothicized Italic.

Most recently, they’ve pursued mentorships to deepen their skills: Ana in Engrosser’s Script and Luis in stone carving. These ongoing relationships with their beloved mentors fuel their passion and allow them to keep growing as artists—so they can bring even more beauty and intention to every piece they create for you.

When not in the studio, Ana and Luis are a part of the calligraphy community at large, and serve as Webmasters for Capital City Scribes, The San Antonio Calligraphy Guild and volunteer for ILEA Austin.

Their work has also been featured physically and digitally and recently received a 2026 Austin Special Events Award with the International Live Events Association.

Meet Luis PeÑa

A smiling man with short dark hair, beard, and mustache, wearing a teal shirt with small white dots, a black vest, and a black tie, standing in a modern office or living space with a white wall and a green accent wall behind him.

Luis has always enjoyed art from a very young age. One day he thought, “You know what would be cool? Making cool letters.” And thus began his calligraphy journey.

With a background in Art History, Luis has always appreciated fine art. After pursuing his degree, he joined the workforce in New York City, and with self-study landed an entry-level job doing graphics work with boutique àtelier Intermix. His love for graphics turned into a photo retouching career of over 10 years, that helped him manage a team of retouchers in a luxury lansdcape. A project management stint and a success coaching career later, Luis decided that it was time to go all in on art — a calling he had felt from the very beginning. With faith in God, he decided to start Handsome Ink with Ana and leave his corporate job to pursue lettering full-time.

Luis is also an award-winning scratchboard artist with works that have been exhibited in the United States and beyond.

On his extra time, he pursues the study of stone carving, is the definition of an audiophile and loves Jesus.

Meet Ana PeÑa

Young woman with shoulder-length dark hair smiling, wearing a yellow dress with short sleeves and decorative buttons, standing indoors near a white wall.

Ana grew up taking art classes since she was eight. Her love of scrapbooking at a young age introduced her to the world of lettering. This very book did the trick!

With a love for all things design and the revolution of the early Internet, she decided she’d have a go at studying design. Thus, Ana received her degree in Communications Design from Pratt Institute and started her career as designer and art director for years to come— with a residency in New York City. She’s helped build identities and brands for all shapes and sizes (think Google, Qualcomm and more) and loves the process of creative thinking (and mostly making merch for silly occasions).

She began formally studying calligraphy in 2014 at the Society of Scribes in NYC and left her corporate career to devote her time to Handsome Ink.

Off-duty, Ana runs It’s Breakfast Dime, an illustration venture inspired by the day she found a dime in her morning omelette. It’s her go-to space for serving hand-lettering and love notes—available 24/7 (well, almost). She loves pan dulce, a good mood board, and singing worship songs!
