Elevate Your Austin Event: Live Pyrography & Hot Foiling Customization

Here at Handsome Ink HQ in Austin, Texas, we are proud to offer a variety of experiential customization services (and yes, some with heat!) When it comes to using heat to add lettering to a surface or substrate, we offer hot foiling and pyrography. We’d like to think that either of these services can fit in nicely with your vision, but not all services are created equal.

What is Experiential Customization?

And when we say that we focus on experiential customization, we mean that we believe that calligraphy is not just limited to pen on paper. On-site calligraphy is about human connection, live interaction, and the tactile experience. We see it as a physical ROI for your event; time and time again, we find that it boosts guest engagement and leaves a lasting impression beyond anything traditional.

what is pyrography and hot foiling?

Our in-house capabilities are perfect for luxury activations. Here is the technical nitty-gritty for those of you that love looking at the details.

Hot foiling

  • Hot foiling is a premium technique that uses heat, pressure, and specialized metallic or colored foil to create, shiny, and often debossed designs on materials like paper, card stock, and leather. In our case, we call it hand foiling as well because we are doing everything freehand — no production machines necessary. We use a heat tool to write on a piece of foil sandwiched between the pen and your surface. The process then causes the foil to be transferred onto the substrate.

Pyrography

  • Pyrography is the art of decorating wood, leather, or other materials with burn marks using a heated metal tool. In this case, we’re using the same heat tool that we use when we foil except that we write onto the surface directly. Some call it writing with fire — but do not fret. No open flames are in sight and most tools in the market are temperature controlled.

Why Choose Pyrography & Foiling for Your Event?

For large scale events that need that personal touch, a material and process that can be quick enough for guests to take home without any fuss. While most live services have their perks, here are why we love hot foiling as a live experience for guests.

  • Instant Dry: No wait times; guests can wear their items immediately (unlike ink).

  • Tactile Luxury: The premium feel of a debossed design.

  • Visual Theater: The live process acts as a crowd-stopper at any pop-up.

Case Study: Driving Sales at the Sézane Austin Pop-Up

Last December, we had the honor of working with Sézane here in Austin to provide a suede customization retail pop-up. Guests had the option to select and purchase a leather or suede item of their choice, and upon purchase, they were directed to our customization station.er.

Which Surface is Best for Customization?

  • Suede: Suede is made from the inside of the animal hide, which in turn gives it a soft and velvet texture.

  • Leather: Leather is made from the outside of the animal hide. For that reason, it’s smooth and tougher than suede. It can last a long time and is very durable.

  • Vegan Leather: Materials like Polyurethane (PU) that imitate traditional leather. We can customize many of these, depending on the heat tolerance of the coating.

Each of these materials has its benefits, and at the end-of-the-day we work with your vision to select what material might be best suited for the guest experience you’re looking for.

The Experience

And if you’re thinking we need a big set-up, think again! A small table and chair will do in most instances since our heat tools are minimal and compact. At the Sézane experience, the guest would bring their item to the pyrography table, fill out the word they wanted, and I would draft a sketch on paper for their approval. Once they gave the green light, I would draft it onto the piece and add heat to bring it to life!

Here are the top items that guests selected to be personalized with pyrography.

  • Suede Jacket & Vest

  • Leather Boots

  • Suede Bag & Belts

The RESULTS

TLDR: We turned a standard retail purchase into an elevated, personalized experience. Dwell time increased, and guests were excited to purchase something for themselves or that special someone with a personalized message.

FAQ for Event Planners

  • Do you need electricity? We work with tools that require electricity and some that don’t. The desired surface you’d like customized determines which tool is best suited for your vision.

  • How much space do you need? Our footprint is minimal, perfect for small retail spaces and intimate gatherings. Plus, it’s noise-free—except for the chatter from your excited guests!

  • What materials can you customize? We can customize leather, suede, wood, and some acrylic surfaces.
