The Event Planner’s Guide to Live Customization: Which Materials Can You Actually Engrave, Foil, or Burn?
Putting the experience in experiential marketing — one surface at a time.
Planners — this one’s for you. Planning an event and looking for unique ideas for personalized swag? You’re in the right place. After all, if you have the right tools and expertise, live personalization can happen on almost any premium material.
Metals & Drinkware
The Material: Powder-coated stainless steel, or metal
Why It Works: It’s rugged, durable, and lasts a long time
Lucky for us, Austin is a top-tier destination for major conferences (like SXSW) and sporting events (like F1). Choosing to personalize something like a tumbler for your guests will not only keep your attendees hydrated, but who actually has the heart to throw away a premium tumbler! Planning a buyout at the Yeti Flagship store or a corporate happy hour on Rainey Street? We set up right on-site to turn those retail purchases into custom activations instantly. Plus, something local and durable like a tumbler or mug is a coveted takeaway, and comes especially handy in the Texas heat.
What Planners Need to Know: Our engraving is done manually! Which means no bulky engraving machines necessary. We use a high-speed rotary drill that cuts right through the powder coating, leaving a permanent, gleaming metallic contrast that won't peel off like a vinyl sticker.
Bonus: Don't worry about lines — we’re pros at keeping the line under control and our live engraving services allow us to service each guest in minutes.
Leather and suede
The Material: Full-grain leather, vegan leather, or suede
Why It Works: A tactile takeaway that can be super premium (think luxe leather) or a great option for a high-volume event (think PU leather). Bonus: some leathers allow us to hot-foil gold (yep—you read that right) which is not only satisfying to watch, but leaves a lasting shimmering result.
Leathers and suedes are perfect for Texas well, because cowboys! With iconic leather shops in Austin like Tecovas, it’s no surprise that out of towners lean into the cowboy vibe when they visit Austin. And if you’re not into the western aesthetic, takeaways like luggage tags or notebooks for conference attendees are sure to be a hit.
What Planners Need to Know: Etching into leather comes in different processes.
Pyrography: burning a dark, rustic mark best for raw and high-premium leathers
Hot Foiling: using heat and pressure to bond metallic gold, silver, or rose gold foil directly into the grain
Wood & Organic Textures
The Material: Hardwoods (Walnut, Maple, Olive wood)
Why It Works: Perfect for Hill Country weddings (like those in Dripping Springs or Wimberley) or lifestyle brands wanting an organic, grounded aesthetic
Live personalized wood is perfect for VIP client gifting, or event signage. Think custom wooden coasters for place cards. These custom items are sure to match most themes at Hill Country vineyard weddings.
What Planners Need to Know: Our handheld pyrography tools allow us to travel with them on-site and (rest assured) are calibrated for your specific material ahead-of-your-event with a sample. That allows us to ensure there is not additional burning and the process is as smoke free- as possible.
The Substrates to Avoid
And though we can work on almost any surface, we do not engrave or handle materials that will be a hazard or disturbance to your event like:
Pressurized Glass: We do not engrave on pressurized glass (like Champagne bottles) because pressure can cause them to explode under a drill). If you’re looking to gift a personalized bottle of bubbly — no problem. We can personalize it with other mediums like paint.
Certain Plastics: Some plastics will not engrave cleanly with our engraving tools or shatter altogether. There are ways to personalize these of course, so if you’re looking for a personalized acrylic, we can work with you to share best circumstances and ways to approach a personalization you will love.
