To help demystify the process, we’ve put together a short checklist of the factors we evaluate when quoting a custom commission, and why investing in a professional calligraphy studio yields a premium, stress-free experience.
1. Timeline and Studio Capacity: The Multi-Calligrapher Advantage
A lot of times, we receive last-minute inquiries for a project that was needed well,…yesterday. While calligraphy is a slow, intentional art form that cannot be rushed without sacrificing quality, our studio is uniquely equipped to handle tight deadlines.
Most local calligraphers in Central Texas operate as solo artists. If they get sick or overwhelmed, your project timeline is at risk.
Because our Austin calligraphy studio features two resident artists—cue Ana and Luis—we offer a level of security and speed that solo acts cannot match.
Our standard in-studio turnaround time for custom commissions is 2 to 3 weeks, depending on current availability. That being said, if you need a faster turnaround, we do offer a rush fee. That rush fee allows us to safely expedite your project by:
Shifting priorities: Pausing internal design tasks to put "all hands on deck" for your timeline.
Doubling our workforce: Splitting the workload amongst Luis and Ana to get your project done in half the time (or less). We’re great partners! We do have a joint business together, after all.
Expedited logistics: Utilizing overnight shipping or local Austin courier services to ensure your pieces arrive ahead of schedule.
Note: While we can accommodate most fast turnarounds, some requests may not be physically feasible—such as hand-engraving 300 perfume bottles overnight. We will always give you an honest, transparent assessment of what can be safely executed.
2. Technical Skillset: Pointed Pen vs. Monoline Script
The specific style of lettering your project requires directly impacts the hours needed for completion. Different tools demand different levels of precision and execution time.
Pointed pen calligraphy: This technique uses a flexible metal nib dipped in ink. By varying the pressure applied to the pen, we create the classic, elegant contrast of thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes. This high-end, luxury style is perfect for formal Austin wedding invitations and heirloom commissions, but it requires meticulous care and extra drying time.
Modern monoline lettering: This style uses a single-width tool, such as a specialized pen or marker. Because the line weight remains perfectly consistent throughout the word, the process is faster. Monoline script is an excellent, budget-friendly option for contemporary event signage, place cards, or casual menus.
3. Fine Art Substrates and Archival Materials
The quality of the surfaces and inks used in your project determines how well it will age. A common pitfall with more accessible services is the use of craft-grade inks that bleed into the paper or fade to a dull yellow over time.
We work with fine-art, archival-quality materials to ensure your custom commission lasts for years to come. However, premium materials naturally influence the final estimate:
Standard substrates: High-quality, heavy-weight cotton papers and professional calligraphy inks provide a beautiful, clean finish
Luxury materials: If your vision includes traditional calfskin vellum, custom wood surfaces, acrylic boards, or genuine gold leaf gilding, the material sourcing and specialized handling add a premium to the quote. Some of these surfaces do have to be prepared, after all.
