And though addressing might seem simple on the outside, it’s much more than that. When you book a calligrapher to address your envelopes, you’re investing in a premium service that comes with insider secrets, technical knowledge, and detail management.

Case Study: Hand Addressing Fibrous & Handmade Envelopes
Before ink ever hits paper, we analyze both your physical materials and your guest list data to catch formatting errors or deliverability issues early. And before that, we work with you to ensure we have a matching end result vision with questions that will help inform the complexity and look’n’feel of the final result, like:

Once we have all these details (and a finalized and ready-for-calligraphy format guest list) it’s go-time.
For these envelopes and invitations, the bride wanted a custom color match (yep, we can do that) and a specific script style, which we adapted with one of our signature styles. Once we sent her a mock-up of the script placement, and color, and she approved, we were good to move into calligraphizing (that’s a word, right?)
Not all paper is created equal
Remember when we said earlier that addressing envelopes is a luxury service? That’s because no substrate is the same, and every job is distinctly different. For this request, we were working with one-of-a-kind Tabula Amalfi paper, which meant that yep—it was very fibrous. Emphasis on very.
Fibrous paper and a sharp nib are not the best of friends (might as well be enemies), as you can imagine. And when a calligrapher attempts to drag down ink with a sharp pen point on a handmade paper, well, you might imagine what comes next. The result is the nib snagging on the paper, and pulling the fibers out, which is bad news bears because:
a) the fibers then drag the ink (ick) and
b) the process takes 1000x longer, with a potential low-fidelity result
Here at Handsome Ink HQ in Austin, we pride ourselves in our craftsmanship, so dragged fibers and messy ink on heirloom paper does not pass or come even near our quality control.
So what do did we do you might be asking? Well, most people won’t even take this kind of paper on—we get it, it’s temperamental, time consuming and there’s a high risk of error. BUT— thankfully, our years of experience and networking allow us to have some insider trade secrets (non-jail worthy, I promise!) that allow us to do our job at a high-level when working with custom paper like this one.
The answer? Hairspray. Yep, good ol’ hairspray. A light quick spray of the stuff on the surface that will be penned on allows those pesky hairs to stick to the substrate, and create a calendared surface much smoother for a sharp nib to do its job without pulling up fibers. (Note: Don't try this at home without testing! Too close or too heavy, and you’ll end up with water spots on luxury stock).
And though it might make the studio smell like a dance competition for a short time (though we recommend spraying carefully outside), this saves hours and allows for a high-fidelity result. Win-win. So that’s what we did here.
Each envelope was hand-addressed with a custom-blended ink. Emphasis on hand! Beyond getting the shade right, this means adjusting ink viscosity, opacity, and binding agents so the ink sits crisp on the surface without bleeding into porous paper. This process is time consuming, but well worth the wait—your guest’s reactions upon receiving your envelopes is mega worth it, as some of them might even keep it foreva!
Not only that, but a reminder that years of practice allow for a calligrapher to to properly estimate the spacing on an envelope so that everything is optically centered without having to draft. Like I said, all this behind-the-scenes work is necessary, and is included in the premium investment you receive when you work with the right calligrapher (hint, hint) to address your envelopes.
Bonus: this bride wanted the bride and groom’s names hand inscribed on each invitation (yup) to match the custom envelopes. We love working with brides who think of all of these details because at the end of the day we love a matching stationery set (duh), but it allows us to work with the finnickiest, and trickiest of materials to make someone’s big day extra special.
