The Luxury GWP: Calligraphy Debossing for Nordstrom Beauty
Making ‘gifts with purchase’ that much better with—you guessed it—calligraphy
In October 2026, we had the pleasure of collaborating with SunDreams Productions to bring debossing calligraphy services on-site with Nordstrom to their Austin flagship locations.
What is debossing?
Debossing is the process of pressing a design, logo, or text inward into the surface of a material to create a sunken, indented effect. In our case, through the use of a heat pen.

The process of a Debossing Activation
When we are on-site for an activation, letting the customers know that there is a special event is a big part of the success of the experience. In our case, we have been very lucky to work with great retail managers who go above and beyond to showcase the on-site activity. First, they tell the floor staff that the activation is live. Upon arrival, we create a couple of sample pieces which are then used to show the staff the service that is being provided, and what the parameters are around it. That way, the staff is fully prepared to offer the gift with purchase to any qualifying customers.
You can’t surprise and delight ‘em if they don’t know you’re there, right?
Thankfully, this October was no exception. After the retail staff was informed of the personalization, they personally brought any qualifying customers to the “debossing table.” Here at Handsome Ink we always talk about how on-site calligraphy makes the customer experience exponentially better, and this is a prime example. The customer already feels valued and in on an exclusive offer (hint—it’s an exclusive offer with purchase, but the personal aspect makes it feel exclusive in a way a standard gift-with-purchase is not.)
It is at this point that we as calligraphers welcome them to our table, explain what personalization offers are on the table, and create something unique and personal (most often with their own name) before their very own eyes.
Beyond being able to perform live lettering with a captive audience, we must also be courteous, strike up meaningful conversation and still provide an exceptional service, all while holding a 350°F heat pen in our hands. It’s just part of the job. And it’s why it’s considered a luxury service.
Debossing on Vinyl
Vinyl can be a tricky surface. Fortunately, our tool belt (more like makeup carrying case kit) holds many tips and tricks of the trade, including a heat pen. These heat pens are great for our signature service of hot foiling. When it comes to debossing, we simply skip the foil part of the process and press the pen directly onto the substrate.
The result is a beautiful blind debossed keepsake that is permanently indented.

By the Numbers
At one Austin location we served 30 or more customers in four hours, on a busy, holiday-style shopping weekend. The table sat where shoppers could see the promotion as they walked in, ask about it, shop to qualify, and then come back for the gift with purchase. In more than a few cases, that is exactly what happened.
At the end of the day, it takes a full staff to host a successful activation, from the planners (thanks Nordstrom and SunDreams) to the people on-staff daily like the store and beauty managers (thanks Irving and Julie) to the calligraphers on-site.
The result is a happy and loyal customer who will most likely keep a piece of memorabilia in their bathroom because it has their very own name on it.
Looking to host a debossing activation at your next event? Find us at our Contact us page, and we’ll talk your ear off about why we have so much fun bringing live experiences to life (after you tell us all about your upcoming event and how we can help, of course).
